Your Workers Have Left the Perimeter. Are You Ready?

  • February 3, 2018
  • NetGuys

Workers have more flexibility and freedom than ever before. Relying on traditional security controls designed for a locked down workplace won't protect your roaming and remote users.

Your Workers Have Left the Perimeter

By 2021, Gartner predicts the average company will have 25% of its corporate data traffic bypassing the network perimeter. When a user is off-network, they are more vulnerable and the organization lacks visibility and protection. If you rely on perimeter security alone, you're not fully protected. These gaps open the door for malware, ransomware, and other attacks.

Words from Our CEO

Recently I had the distinct honor of representing NetGuys at the Cisco Partner Summit held in Dallas, TX on November 1 - 2. This "invite only" event indicates NetGuys is on the map! It has taken some time to be afforded this opportunity and I believe it represents the hard work, dedication, and consistency our team has demonstrated. So before I discuss what I learned at the event, I want to take a moment to congratulate and thank our team on this accomplishment. Without the tremendous teamwork this would not have been possible. Thanks team!

Cisco made it clear right from the beginning that it is no longer the hardware based company we have all come to know and love. The announcement of the BroadSoft acquisition and its Google partnership were only a few indications of what's in store the next couple of years for partners and customers. The message was loud and clear, the hybrid solutions of cloud and on-premise equipment is here and only going to continue to grow.

This newsletter marks a tremendous milestone for NetGuys. March 2017 makes it five years since we started our company. According to the Small Business Administration, it's interesting to note that half of all small businesses fail within the first five years. With that said, we would like to express our sincere thanks to so many who have helped make the last five years a reality.

Collaboration in Today's Business

The term "Collaboration" today means much more than just exchanging messages and data (which eventually came to include video conferencing). Asking five different people to lay out their understanding of collaboration will reveal five different opinions. Nowadays we want to exchange information instantly over one or more convenient channels to avoid any delay. Many confuse collaboration with just video conferencing, but this is just one possibility to get together to avoid the odds and imponderables of travel. During the early ages of video communications, video was perceived as “nice to have,” but over the years this changed into a reputable way to meet. With Immersive Video the gap between meeting in person and high quality video was drastically reduced, and the impression video gives to be in one room with others is almost perfect.

Why Support Is Important to Me

My primary role with The Netguys is to manage our service team, with access to internal engineering resources that would be any manager’s dream. The experience and Cisco knowledge of our engineers that is available to our customers is off the charts. But engineering excellence isn’t the key to the success of our support team, believe it or not. Collaboration Migration

Let’s face it, time flies like a fruit…err…an arrow. Or was it a banana? The point is, Unified Communication (UC) systems often hum along in the datacenter, dutifully, for years, while maintenance contracts approach expiration, and original design practices are barely holding on. The output of your screen is showing 1,544 days of uptime, and you realize that you haven’t been keeping up with patch Tuesday for over four years. It’s time to make a call to your trusted Cisco partner, and begin the process of upgrading.
